Thin wiring and no diagram makes repairs very difficult. Batteries do not last more than 5 months even with rare usage.

"worked great until it broke" 2010-01-09
By The Bus (NC, United States)
Thing worked great until it broke! Had it just over 3 years and there is something messed up with it. Works fine with the key but won't open using the keypad anymore. I figure I've cycled the thing about 2000 times in it's life (twice a day for 3 years) and I think it should last longer than that. The keypad still works, and it beeps like it got the correct code, but instead of opening it just makes a pitiful wirring noise now. Plus like the other reviewer said the batteries are incredibly difficult to change, not so bad if the unit is free but if you have it mounted to something it can be darn near painful to try and replace them. I think it did a great job while it lasted, and I never had any doubt that it was secured. I always changed the batteries at one year intervals just to be safe. (heh heh, no pun intended) But now that it's broken I'm finding it difficult to cough up another $100 to buy a replacement. From what I've read here and on other review sites the company pretty much tells you to go jump in a lake after the first year. Not what I'd like to hear. Wouldn't it be great to hear somebody say "Yeah, had it five years and then it acted up and the company said hey no problem send it in and we'll ship you a new/re-furbed one no problem!" No that is what I'd expect for $100. Not a "hey pay $20 to ship it to us, pay $20 for us to look at it, and then we'll sell you a replacement for $80 more". Why bother! When I got this it was the only thing like it out there. I see now there are a lot of other companies offering similar products. I may have to try something else next time.

"The batteries lasted longer than the safe." 2009-10-01

I purchased the "Deluxe Double." It worked well for 14 months--it was covered by a 12 month warranty. At that time the lock release activated by the keypad quit working. The keypad could not be used and it could only be opened with the key. The company said they would not repair the unit and offered to replace it for $80 plus shipping cost. They said they no longer service old units (14 months old?). For the price of this unit I expected it to last much longer. The company does not stand behind their product. The batteries lasted longer than the safe.

"Fast for you but not the kids" 2009-07-13

I have one double Gunvault safe and two single Gunvault safes. I've owned them for almost 3 years now and have not had to replace the batteries in the double Gunvault yet. I've had to replace the batteries once in both of the single Gunvaults. It is easier to put the batteries in the double than it is the single since the batteries are mounted to the upper inside behind the mechanism. I have one in my car, one by my bed and one at work. I didn't want to mount them with screws so I used two sided tape and bought the Gunvault security cable so they wouldn't walk off. This won't keep the determined burglar from getting inside but family and friends will be safe from the curious explorer. I use these for the guns that I don't keep in my large safe which has a rotary dial combination lock. These are fast and easy to get into if you know the correct finger combo.

 "Shoddy Merchandise" 2009-07-08

I ordered this vault to review it for a gun safety blog and community and after first opening it the safe door would not close. I called the company and the tech support person explained this was a common problem and asked me to get a phillips head screwdriver and peel back the foam covering the latch mechanism and try to loosen the screw there. I did as he asked, which was not easy, since a regular sized screw driver is too long to reach the screw and a drill bit sized head didn't give me the right amount of leverage. I eventually had to use a pair of pliers and the drill bit head and got it loosened. Then after toying with the lock mechanism I got the door to shut.

I waited a moment and was going to try to open the vault with my fingerprint when the door just opened on its own. I went to shut it and it wouldn't shut again. While I could repeat the process of adjusting the lock mechanism between each opening and closing and can get the door to close, It would not reliably stay shut. Not the ideal situation for a gun safe, especially one that costs north of $300.

Do not purchase this product. It is poorly made and when it comes to the safety of human lives, companies that cut corners are in my opinion reprehensible.

Also when I tried to get a comment from the company about the quality of their product for the review I am writing for the gun safety blog they sent me to voice mail and never returned my call. Caveat Emptor.
