"Beware - you MUST bolt it down or it is useless" 2009-06-19

At first glance, this safe looks alright. It's solid, and the keypad and electronic lock seemed to work just fine. You get to pick a 3 to 8 digit combination, and it will time out after a few wrong attempts. It does take a second for the lock to open, but that wasn't a big issue for me.

But there was one thing that was an issue. I had to return this safe because it didn't say that you have to bolt it down for it to be any good. Let me explain.

Suppose the safe is not mounted to a shelf or drawer, and you pick it up and look at the bottom. Before your eyes are about 8 screws that can be quickly removed. After this, the bottom of the safe comes off, and all your stuff comes out.

But if that's too difficult, there is a small rectangular slot in the bottom of the safe near the electronic lock. The interesting thing about this slot is that it exposes a metal piece of the lock that you can very easily push with a pen or key, and this completely unlocks the safe.

Now, supposing you do bolt it down. If you can bolt it down in such a way that you can't unscrew the mounting nuts from the bottom, I suppose it would work OK. But if I read the instructions right, it just told you to use regular old screws and nuts with the screw head inside the safe, and the nut underneath. With this setup, some quick work with an adjustable wrench puts you in the same situation as above.

The description mentions mounting the safe in a drawer or a shelf. The description should say that the safe is useless unless mounted properly.

A better built safe without these security flaws would warrant 4 or 5 stars. But as is, I can only give one.

"Does the job, could be faster" 2008-08-28

There's plenty of room in the safe for a handgun, some important papers, extra clips and some small assorted items. I do worry about the speed of usage though if something were to happen. First, you have to add special keys to the beginning and end of your combination which slows down your open time and then it takes about 1.5 seconds to pop the lid.

Combined with the fact that it relies on batteries (the key would be a joke to use in a life or death situation), this might not be the best buy for a handgun safe. I like the safe and it is sturdy but if I had to choose again, I'd probably go fully mechanical to get the extra peace of mind that my batteries are going to die when I need them most.

"Well designed, appears secure and is easy to use. Well done!" 2008-07-04

I was looking for a quick access, secure storage unit in which my children's medications could be safely stored. Recall the stories you see see about how many kids get access to drugs from the family's medicine cabinet. Believe it.

This safe slips into a drawer and can be opened in about 20 seconds. It is tall enough to hold prescription bottles, money, passports, all the stuff that needs protection.

The spring loaded top releases quickly and relocking involves closing the lid until it latches. There is a double bitted key that should be well hidden for opening the safe in the event of a dead battery pack (there are 4 - replace the originals with heavy duty alkalines) or if the electronic mechanism fails.

I searched a lot for this - other safes can open very simply without a tool - check Youtube..

Price is reasonable.

This safe is good for what it is.. a hair slower than I would like to open, but overall good.

Sell the Cannon safe as scrap metal. Take the money and put it towards a new safe. Video the whole process from complete safe to cut up chunks of metal going into the melting pot
Drawer Safe. Then burn a copy to CD/DVD and mail it with a letter of explanation to the President of Cannon Safes
